Johan Greeff was invited to speak at the third Annual Skills Development Summit held on 14 -16 April 2008 at the Sandton Hilton Hotel. Speaking about "Highlighting the challenges of retaining a skilled workforce in today's competitive landscape: how to beat your competitors", he highlighted the fact that we live in the age of talent; that after 500 years the scarcest and most valuable resource in business is not financial capital, but human capital.
Talent is recognised as the most important source of competitive advantage. It provides a competitive edge, allows for strategy implementation, guarantees excellence in customer and other services, serves as an investment in the future, and brings about stability.
Factors influencing availability of talent include education, migration, demand, and global trends, whereas security is influenced by market demands, economics, crime etc.
Businesses face a growing battle for sought-after assets. Although a global phenomenon, in South Africa this is exacerbated by the "brain drain". South Africa currently needs 913 000 people with critical skills, including those of farmers and farm workers, teachers, engineers, pharmacists, architects and handymen.
To win the talent war, there are several strategies one can follow. Having the right general is important - numerous studies see leadership as the main factor that can bring about retention. Clear strategies and objectives are critical, as is employing the right tactics and training your soldiers. Use state of the art equipment. And lastly, never underestimate your opposition.
As part of our vision to be the "Leadership Partnership", we are committed to helping individuals discover themselves, their own strengths and potential. We can help you:
